I was carrying a flash in my coat pocket (I'm sure how that actually sounds) but didn't use it for the reasons you suggested. The reality is that unless you were just taking shots from one location off camera flash would be too time consuming to set up amongst other things. It is a competition and the competitors shoulda take prescidence over ones photographic aspirations I guess.
Next time I go to a practice day I'll have a word with some of the competitors and see what their feelings about flash use at and whether I would distract them

Couldn't agree more, but it'd definitely be something to consider if you could find a couple of riders that are ok with it. I'd guess that as long as it wasn't in their eyes too much, they'd have over things to focus on.

It might just pop the rider out from the background a touch more. Still very good shots as they are though...

I have used it at night meets, but I used a diffuser

If it was an event where pro photographers were operating (such as a World Championship round) there would be flashes going off all the time. I'm sure some of the p&s cameras there yesterday probably flashed more than once. As I said when I'm in a non com[competitive environment next time I'll see how things go.

Thanks Richard! Stan was pretty happy with his third. Zachary not that happy with the way he rode apparently. Bike troubles were blamed as well as operator error. Both in bed - tired little fellas!
