Holy moly! That's a massive drop-off! Composition-wise, I would like a little more space on the right, for the water to 'spill into'.

Is this better with the water flowing?

I like the light on the water, although its a pity you don't have the bottom of the dam in the frame, to show the full height of the dam wall.

Yes I agree, but you can't access a position to do that anymore. 30 years ago you could drive all the way down to the power station and see it from the bottom up, but now it's all fenced off with dire warnings of the sky falling in should you go there. I do have some slides somewhere of the whole scene, but I wouldn't be able to put my hands on them easily. (Wouldn't scan well anyway).

All fair comment though and thanks for that!

when a photo does not grab my attention I go looking for the thing that attracted the photographer to make the picture in the first place.

I think this is the photo you saw first, but then you forgot that and added more around it. I do that a lot myself!

              I think not.

It's interesting to get another perspective on a shot but it doesn't always coincide with the reason for taking it. I was attempting to portray a lake full to overflowing, and the depth of the chasm it's spilling into.

By cropping to the extent you did, it could well be water coming out of the end of a drainpipe!

I agree with Beeb and Gordon that the shot would be much improved with more of the valley in shot.
