  • Fire twirling - awesome and disappointing .....

So my lovely 23 year old neighbour offered to do some fire twirling for me, what a great photo opportunity! I thought the local oval would be great, its pretty isolated ie its not overlooked except by the club house. Doing the twirling in the middle of the oval (holds two soccer fields so its big!) would be safe because its surrounded by bush.

Tan did the first twirl to see how the new kevlar burnt while I set up the camera... each session lasts about 3 mins depending on the fuel. So second spin .............. all of a sudden there's jeering and shouting from the verandah of the club house where about 15 fellas are drinking after their game. "What are you doing! Put the bl@@dy things out and on and on it went" Now you can't extinguish these things once they're lit (you could in a bucket of water) so best just to let them burn out after a couple of minutes, I managed to click a few frames with the settings I had guessed.

The bright sparks in the club house thought they'd really spoil the fun by turning the floodlights on on the oval, absolutely ensuring there were no more pics to be had. OMG, I was disgusted. They were all very brave with their beers, 100m away 4 meters up in "their" club house, shouting at a middle aged woman (and that's generous) and young lady......

Tan walked all the way over to them to explain what we were doing meanwhile the taunts continued "circus freak!" She told them very politely that we would stop the fire twirling but would be continuing with some light painting......... they turned the lights off and went back inside. She handled herself very well - I would've said something I may have regretted I'm sure, but seriously - how old are you?! Would it have killed them to walk over to talk to us? "Can I ask what you're doing? Will it damage the grass? We have some concerns ..... " (I must admit I didn't want to walk into the club house before we started to let them know what we were doing, I thought that'd be asking for trouble)

Anyhoo here are two shots of the night:

We had planned to "map" her various routines but will have to that some other time. This will give you an idea of how it looks. You can get quite close because nothing really flys off.

f 2.8 (would've changed this to f5.6/f8 and lengthened the shutter speed if I'd had the opportunity)

Oh wow. Considering the blokes did their best to stuff your evening up these are excellent. I LOVE the second shot.

Awww how disappointing but how wonderful your results are. Herd mentality, all brave within a group with some dutch courage.
I really love the concept of your second one, especially the light wand result (not that I don't like the dome one, but that is beyond something I can do), so how long are these wands, I have some from Shiploads - hopefully they are the same thing, I'm just waiting on my wireless remote to arrive so I can do more night time stuff with success I hope. How long was your exposure of the light wand one.

The fire twirling looks terrific and hopefully next time you will not be interrupted, can you do it in a backyard then?

Welcome to Australian sports club social behaviour. I would not have expected anything less from a group drinking on a Saturday evening. It's unfortunate but it's cultural and until attitudes change in about another 200 years the same thing would be repeated and almost any sports ground in the country.

Good on Tan for approaching the guys, it probably made a big difference when they realised they weren't going to intimidate you and that took all the fun out of it for them, and good on you for continuing, it is a shame you couldn't do more fire twirling but the lightpainting looks terrific.

Thanks guys. Have a few more but a bit messy will download some more.

              Yep K1W1 you're right - shame really.

Jenne the dome is really easy! You'd be able to do it no prob! See the post, dome revealed for flap I think I called it, all the pics and instructions are there....... It's more simple than it looks. The light wands are about 20cms long, and the exposure, because of the dome was about 3 mins I reckon. If you just did the wands and sparkle maybe 40 secs? Really depends how much "colouring in" you want to do.

              Thanks tanz, thanks aslan ....

Well done, they look great. I wouldn't even know where to begin to do anything like that but it's great seeing what others come up with.

                              G'day TN

Excellent results - esp #2 and considering your operational difficulties too
May I suggest - as #2 is such a cracker shot, print it to A3 or thereabouts and both you & Tan go back to the club to show the management and explain what you are up to. With the management on-side, they will very probably take the print / point you towards the yahoos, whereby you can invite one of them to assist Tan out in the middle

I put things this way as, from experience, I find that to involve the management [and alert police from time to time] will cut down on the interference factor

                              Regards, Phil
