A POST! (It looks a bit tyred)

Wind direction at ground level doesn't seem to be a high priority for pilots out that way,

Shame the weather went a bit pear shaped afterwards for you

For outback pilots windsocks appear to be no more than a rough indication of airstrip location, close enough is good enough.

(At the mo I'm camped some where slightly north of Woomera and the weather is delightful, blue skies and roads ahead are now open. Bloody glad I invested in thermal underware though! Cooper Pedy here I come ready or not.)
