Well I finally suppressed the feelings of guilt and made the decision to spend some of the kids inheritance on a Nikon Z8. Most of the buttons have moved which is a bit disconcerting but will just take a bit of time for muscle memory to kick in. The subject detection autofocus is amazing. The price was the lowest I've seen for Australian stock whch helped a lot.

It's raining here again this morning so I have just tried a few shots from the house.

    1. From the back door with a crop to about half the width and height of the full frame. The camera detected the bird and focused on the eye automatically - even in other other shots where the bird was partially obscured by foliage.

Thanks David. It is impressive and has many more settings to get wrong.

Excellent images Alan. Looks like you're on a winner. Seems you can use your existing lenses as well. Way out of my league. It puts my 7Dii to shame

I would probably update to mirrorless if the prices weren't so ridiculous. Imagine the profits from these greedy companies if all budding togs could afford the latest gear. I'm sort of stuck with Canon because of the lenses I have. They changed the connection system to make more money and their conversion adaptor is just a stupid price. They even stopped lens manufacturers like sigma and Tamron from making lenses for their mirrorless models. I'll just stick with what I have and admire from a distance the ever improved results from all the new gear.

$1788 for an R7 body and $176 for the mount adaptor doesn’t sound too ridiculous to me, considering the R&D costs and an interchangeable lens camera market that has suffered a huge decline. How does it compare to the price paid for the 7D.

It comes down to how satisfied you are with your current gear and your priorities on using limited resources. The 7D and equivalent cameras still produce excellent results, just without the latest bells and whistles. A battery charge lasts much longer too.

I wouldn't go APS-C, only FF. Not within my budget. Getting another APS-C is only replacing what I already have so not really an upgrade for what I use it for. I can get a pretty decent guitar for less than that, like a Gretsch G5655T.
My original kit 7D cost me $1300 with a few lenses, grip and 72mm CPL. The camera was replaced with the 7Dii by insurance after it got damaged, so I'm in front as it was priced at $2499

Yes, full-frame is quite a chunk more money'.

Excellent set Alan, a good start with the new camera.

OMD has quite good subject recognition, but does not always get the focus right....

Thanks Mark. I think they all get it wrong sometimes.
