  • Orange seeds or berries attached to Fairy-wren

I saw this Fairy-wren this morning which has what appear to be sticky seeds attached to it. It didn't look well, sitting down on the ground until I got quite close. It seemed to fly ok. I thought it was injured at first but in the photos it looks more like seeds.

I'm curious if anyone can identify what the orange things actually are.

Lovely shots Alan but no idea on the orange things - could be from plants though.

      Poor thing, well photo'd..........

The berries in the first couple of shots look like Yew berries to me, but unsure if you have those in Oz...

The last photo shows what looks like a growth on his beak....

I doubt if there are any Yews around here. Are the berries sticky.

good series of images of what could be a sad subject.
cant help but feeling that these are some sort of parasites.
hopefully I am wrong and he is ok at the end of it.

It could be parasites but google hasn't turned anything up. I did find some plants with sticky yellow/orange seeds, and one had fallen off the bird, I didn't notice it until checking the photos at home or I would have had a closer look.
        Working...
