  • Please correct me if I am wrong, is this a Bustard, if not What.

Went for a drive this afternoon, through the station country inland from Ayr.

I was surprised to see 5 or 6 of these having a feast in a paddock. I had only ever seen a couple of them together at any one time.

Maybe it was the parent bird and their off springs. Personally I am not sure.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I called them a Plain Turkey although the real name is Aust Bustard.

They were nearly shot out for the dinner table but they a now protected.

I'd never seen these before a few months ago when we saw a group of 4 while on a country drive. I didn't get as good a photo as yours though. For each step I moved towards them they moved 2 away.

I had never seen so many of them together, and in the past I have only ever seen solitary adult birds. They always seem to be a very timid bird and walk away at a fair rate of knots when ever they feel threatened. Occasionally I have seen them fly but never managed to capture one in flight.
Here is another photo, not the best and not one I am proud of, but it shows, what must be the cock bird showing off his finery.
