Alan, playing with his Polar Coordinates has given me a bit of inspiration to play with orbs or globes. It really is intriguing what you can come up with just playing around.
This is using polar coordinates to create a glass look.

I was also interested in seeing what actually happens to an image when you apply the polar coordinates, so I tested it with the image below. It gives a good insight to how it distorts.
This is how it turned out. This showed me that I could strategically place different images onto a square and come up with some unusual effects. I'm still experimenting to see what I can do.
