Found a Camp Draft in progress

Stopped in a Queensland outback town the other day to discover a camp draft in progress. Here's a couple of images for your thoughts

Good action shots Phil. #1 and #2 should be straightened and #3 and #4 are a bit over exposed in parts. Considering the sun is low and bright, you've done pretty well. Good detail by freezing the action with 2000 shutter speed.

Good set Phil, #2 my favourite and I don't mind the angles on #1 they suit the rough and tumble scene.

Levelling #1 ... okay I can do that, tho I like Greg's feelings as well
With #4 I was tempted [and will now do] to crop the top of the image at the power lines running across the trees

I remember seeing a show like this in Mt Isa a few years back. A wonderful photographic opportunity.

Crop works well.

What's the aperture? Everything looks in focus - wondering if a wider aperture would have thrown the b/g oof a bit to highlight the subject better. Maybe not possible with that camera?

G'day Alan

Using the Panny FZ-200 [now 300 is on the shelves]; at this event was running in "S" mode @ 1/2000s; Aperture on this frame was F5,0; ISO 400; zoom about 200mm [of its 600mm max]. The beauty of the -200 & -300 is the constant aperture F2,8 lens ... there's not many 600mm F2,8 lenses around and there are times when I go into "A" mode at F2,8 or F4 to intensify the shallow DoF. Because the horses were criss-crossing the arena, it was too hard to try to follow-focus & follow-zoom together, so I set lens to 8x to 10x zoom [200mm to 240mm] and left it there most of the day - cropping if necessary later on

Great action shots Phil, that last one is a ripper. The last camp draught I went to it was a stinking hot summers day in Qld, no wind, the dust hung around like a cloud but the action was great. These small country town turnouts can be the best.
