    That's a lot of gears on the back sprockets. Have they gone away from a selection on the front?

      Not only that - but there's another gear / sprcket thingo on the far side of the rear wheel

          As above, a brake rotor. Hydraulic disc brakes at that, I'm currently nursing the scuffed elbows and knees from the brakes great ability to pull the bike up faster than my body can decelerate.

          10 gears on the rear. 2 or 3 chainrings up front is still common, however dropping it to a single chainring reduces the places the chain can come off over rough terrain, as well as weight reduction and 10 carefully selected gears is more than enough.

            whilst i'm here, here is one of another of my bikes... i'm not so happy with this image, but i'm not sure why... i think it's the tones.

                With pedals like those I assume that you mainly use these as downhill bikes. Is that correct?

                  If they came with mud guards that can't charge you for them as an aftermarket part!
                  Generally the more expensive the bike, the less 'features' it comes with. :/

                  That said, one bike is a road bike so not needed and the other gets covered in that much mud a guard is redundant.
