It is a competition and the competitors shoulda take prescidence over ones photographic aspirations I guess.
Next time I go to a practice day I'll have a word with some of the competitors and see what their feelings about flash use at and whether I would distract them
Couldn't agree more, but it'd definitely be something to consider if you could find a couple of riders that are ok with it. I'd guess that as long as it wasn't in their eyes too much, they'd have over things to focus on.

It might just pop the rider out from the background a touch more. Still very good shots as they are though...

If it was an event where pro photographers were operating (such as a World Championship round) there would be flashes going off all the time. I'm sure some of the p&s cameras there yesterday probably flashed more than once. As I said when I'm in a non com[competitive environment next time I'll see how things go.

Oops, I realise now that my comment was quite ambiguous - I was referring to your suggestion of asking riders in advance at a practice event! Sorry 'bout the confusion!

Congratulations to Zac for coming 5th in the A grade. Maybe he was more in control than I thought.
Also congratulations to Stan for 3rd in the Twin Shock class.

Thanks Richard! Stan was pretty happy with his third. Zachary not that happy with the way he rode apparently. Bike troubles were blamed as well as operator error. Both in bed - tired little fellas!
