K1W1 you're a sports shooting master, love that shot of the ball in hoop and the expression of the right hand girls in that contest.
K8, there was nothing wrong with using aperture mode and I would recommend it given the question you've asked. The problem was you selected the wrong aperture, F11 is just too slow. Set your aperture for the biggest where your lens still has decent image quality. By using a big aperture (eg F2.8 - F4) you'll get lots of light and therefore you will get your fastest shutter speeds. Depending how fast the action is moving relative to you, ie side to side or forewards and back will govern what SS you'll need but typically 1/500th should work fine for side to side and possibly as slow as 1/250 for fore aft movement.
shot in Ap priority at 102mm, 1/400 sec, F2.8, ISO1600 under surprisingly dim flouro lights but crisp as at full size.
