Thanks Mick. Unfortunately the fires are into old growth forest.. and I mean really old Pencil and King Billy Pines which date back to Gondwana. It's not known whether they can regenerate (they suspect not) as they are extremely slow growing and the ground under them is dry enough to burn too. This could change the landscape permanently in Tasmania.

Oh dear, don't like the sound of that at all.
I've read that we could have serious problems in other areas of Australia because of climate change. Bush land that normally needs fire to stimulate new growth will not be able to deal with the mega-fires that may be coming our way. Seed pods that respond to fire may be incinerated in the higher temps from the mega-fires and we'll be left with grass land instead.
The flow on effects from that could be horrendous.

Oh dear that does sound awful, as does what Mick has heard. I hope they get the fires under control soon. We get very few bush fires up this way and usually they get them under control very quickly. The worst part is that they are usually purposely lit either by idiots or a farmer burning off and it gets out of his control. Nice photo, the rolling hills (another thing which is a rarity up here) always appeal to me, as does the golden tones of the dry grass.
