Here's a wider view of the scene.

Thanks Greg - nice to see how it started out
Looks like you took a couple of shots at different focal lengths? To me, in your second post, it looks like the foreground grass and the tree foliage should be in the same focal plane, but in your original post the grass seems more blurred. But if you zoomed in for the first shot that would explain it
Cheers

Several shots were taken using a fencepost as a rest for the big lens. You're correct in saying I used different focal lengths and with the first image, not only was I zoomed in fully at 500mm but fully zoomed digitally as well giving me the equivilant of 1000mm. This image is not a crop of the other which includes the wagon. The first shot I took after searching out the best angle to catch the light and framing from the tree. The grass you see in the forground runs all the way from the camera position to the subjects 50 plus metres away so it's not surprising that some of the clumps show as blurred when the tree branches don't.
A feature of the Sony cameras I use is 'focus peaking' which allows me to use manual focus in live view to show me exactly what part of the scene is in focus and what part is not. For me this is a great help ... and I welcome all the help I can get!
