  • Diversity of land use

I got up at the crack of dawn on Sunday, I had the bike loaded up in the back of the wagon & I headed over to the mainland to a dirt track that went into the forest and set out for a good ride. I rode for 2 hours and what struck me was the diversity of land use within a close proximity to where I live. It went from native forest to strawberry farms to rolling paddocks with cows grazing to plantation pine, there was even a peaceful lake hidden in the trees with prolific bird life around. All the things you don't know even exist unless you get off the beaten path. Naturally all the shots were taken with my trusty S100.

It looks like mist through the trees but it is actually a smoke haze from the bushfires out west of Brisbane. Native forest on one side of the track, pine on the other

I rode over a hill and ran into this strawberry farm, one of many along the tracks. There were strawberry plants as far as the eye could see.

Then a while later I ran into this, rolling paddocks with cows grazing. I had to shake my head because it was like I had been transported to central west NSW, it was that sort of country

Pine trees on one side of the track, grazing land and feed paddocks on the other

Then I ran into this small but quite beautiful lake, very peaceful in the early morning light with a prolific bird population

And of course the ever present pine forests that take up a lot of land in our area. They supply the local timber mills and are leased from the State Government with contracts for thinning and clear felling

The Cannondale was getting pretty dusty (along with me as well haha)

I ran into trail bike riders and 4x4's on my ride. The guys on trail bikes are all pretty good, they slow down when they see you and say goodaye, then roar off when they are past you. The 4x4'ers on the other hand are just tossers - even the trail bike riders hate them - every one just looked at me as an opportunity to speed up as fast as they could and throw rocks and dust all over me. They are the one thing I hate, it does not matter where you ride you strike them. I reckon one will come to grief doing it one day then I will just ride up, laugh at them and leave them to figure out how to get going again, idiots.

Just Proves Lloyd, Dirt or Tar roads, Cars hate bikes.

    Nice set.
I particularly like the 1st one, and the lake. Looks like a great place to ride.

Thanks Scott. I'd love to take the DSLR but the thought of a heavy backpack does nothing for me!! Yes, I never ride on roads unless I absolutely have to. The thing that annoys me is the 4x4's actually speed up, they don't slow. They actually try and broadside at you to throw rocks and dirt over you when all you are doing is standing and waiting on the side of the track for the idiots to pass. So many clowns, so few circus's

I met a few of those clowns on my last trip up the Gibb River Road Lloyd lol. Flat out on heavily corrugated narrow tracks pulling heavy camper trailers that are flapping around in the breeze, rock hard tyres all round for maximum loss of steering and control, windows up and music on, not a care in the world.

What could possibly go wrong in the outback.

Rant aside, nice images Lloyd. That lake looks like it might be good birding ground.

Haha they are everywhere Mick! I'm a bit like you as I had a 4x4 long before it was fashionable! Working in the bush it was a must have, not a fashion statement. I used to go regularly up the beach with Chris and friends that used to camp there, but don't do it anymore, the idiots have spoilt it for the normal people. I used to have the clowns you are talking about pass me all the time out west, you just have to shake your head in wonder at the speeds they do on bad roads, and yes, with the camper trailer literally flapping in the breeze as it jumps from one pot hole to the next You see them in the next town pulled up trying to rope something on has broken off

You are right, the best birding spots are often in places people rarely venture into. I just wish I could carry my DSLR and birding lens on the bike, the birds don't tend to worry about you when you are just peddling along. It would be my luck I'd get a bag and fall off and break the camera haha. At least with the S100 it just tucks into my pocket.

you must be sooo sore after "running into" so many things .................................................. ..

You are (finally) onto my thoughts LG, the camera doesn't really matter when taking recording photos.

Great set of images. I wish I had that sort of diversity close to me; I'm really bored photographically.

Did that a while ago, I just made sure they had water. Don't laugh at my little Kia buster.

And later in the day I found a couple in a broken down van (a bomb really); ended up getting them home.

Yes Ian, the S100 is a great camera, but it still doesn't replace my DSLR - although one day smaller units will I reckon

Whenever we used to go up the beach (or bush) if a "normal" person got bogged I would always help or tow them out. If it is the clowns though I just drive around them and leave them to it. They get the screaming irits but so sad too bad, you shouldn't have roared past me like a lunatic throwing rocks or sand all over my car. The best bit is up near the Freshwater campsite on the way to Double Island Point, you get the drop offs, where the fresh water runs down the sand you get a drop of a foot or so (some more, some less). If you drive safely you see them and can slow down - at speed though you just fly off one side and slam into the other. This is how a few of them manage to roll over on a perfectly good beach. That and doing donuts or broadsides, the car slips, then digs in and bang, over they go. I'm afraid I have NO sympathy for them when they do that. Near the camp sites you get kids playing and they are roaring up the beach at 80+kph without any care factor at all. Kids on a beach don't always look for cars so you have ot be careful of them and go past at a very slow speed. They turn and run without notice because they don't associate the beach as a road.

                          Ian

I reckon that Canon are missing out on a lot of revenue. They need to bring out a trailer mounted lens. Similiar to wheeled Surface to Air Missile launcher......jeez it could even be tracked for the super out of the way hard to get to spots!
