  • A vicarious Kiwi holiday - day 8 (only a couple photos)

Drove in heavy rain nearly 200 km from Greymouth to Franz Joseph Glacier today.

The heavy rain had me decide to perk the family up with a good motel today. I'm only finding a few places that drop their prices in this off season, so many seam to want high season prices still. Today though was a gem, they did me a 2 or 3 day deal at $170 pn that brought a good suite of a standard many people would aspire to live in.

The family are giving me grief about the glacier walk (the kids don't want to do it). I don't know whether to put my foot down and insist we go or not. It's a short helicopter flight and then 3hr hike back down. Roughly $280 per head. I can't believe a tight wad like me is considering it but I figure it's once in a lifetime.

Anyway a couple from a lovely short bushwalk (Kiwi's call it a tramp) at lake Mahinapua and then a HDR edit of the glacier I've tried on this dodgy screen. It looks good to me, hope it comes up ok on your monitors, it took a while to do it.

Anyway I'm here at least tomorrow and probably the next day as well doing the walks properly. I did today's glacier walk on my own while they rested. Hence I had enough time to try for a proper photo from a tripod at dusk.

Another awesome meal too just to help with the jealosy, chicken filo pastry with sun dried tomato and brie for tea at "The Landing".

That's it. You are going on my ban list until you get back to Adelaide.

Anyone know how long the drive to Te Anau is from Franz Joseph?

No idea DPR, but I'm loving your images....

I feel we should organise a long photowalk in NZ next year?
        Cheers Richard !

I've never driven it as a driver and as a passenger I can't remember. I suspect that you would take the Google map time and double it due to necessary photo stops.

Never make the same mistake twice, there are so many new ones, try a different one each day

That's an afternoon walk in the bush. A tramp is an overnight walk carrying a pack.

                  Mate, It's a LONG Drive.

We did Queenstown to Fox, and from memory it was about 5-6 hours. With very few stops. There are a few things worth stopping for, but we didn't, and I regretted it.
Lot's of windy roads to slow you down.

Franz to Fox is 20-30 mins(?)
Then Queenstown to Te Anau, was about 3 hours. Again from memory. so I could be wrong.
This part of the drive is not so windy, but going around Lake Wakatipu can be slow pending traffic.
