Well seen Mark. I think the sea and rocks are required to emphasise the context of a child digging on a beach, and helps your caption to work. Cropping a little closer would make the child more prominent.

Great photo showing the creative mind of a young lad. Image wise adding to what others have mentioed, perhaps add some DOF to blur out the rocky parts? Try using the Tilt Shift filter in the Blur Gallery to get an effect like so. For fun, I changed the colour of the rocks section to match the sandy colour and make it look more like a water colour. I hope you don't mind. Let me know if you want the PSD file.
