I wish I had the gift of the gab Phil. Since we all have easy access to colour B&W has been mainly used to add some drama to an image. The first image has bags of texture but very little interest.
The second is a little soft and is also lacking interest. I like the third image but can't help feeling it would look better in colour. Hope I'm not being to tough.
Better a full bottle in front of me
    than a full frontal lobotomy.

Hi Phil, I mostly agree with Hans here.

#1 could do with more contrast here but the subject isn't all that interesting

#2 looks a bit "muddy" and has some halos around the foreground foliage. Oddly it also gives the impression of traces of colour in the grass and trees. I like the dramatic sky though.

#3 has the most potential with good tones but the tree looks a bit cramped into the frame

Generally I think monochrome should have black blacks and white whites with a good range of tones in between, although it depends on the mood and effect you are after.
