  • Mirrorless cameras and their speed / performance operation - some samples

    G'day all

There is a lot of interest these days in mirrorless cameras and their speed / performance operation
As many here know, I have been running mirrorless for many years now - the Panny G2 for best part of a decade has been replaced last year with the Panny FZ2500 - and the improvements in AF-C and other things is quite noticeable

Last Saturday night I went down the road to a local fun park and had a pleasant hour or two shooting heaps of action - some hi-speed stuff looking at the faces of kids enjoying the thrills of it all - and lots of long-shutter blur stuff

Here's a group of 4 pics where the Whizzer is coming towards the camera at high speed before it spun around and disappeared around to the other side.

    Typical exif ... Panny FZ2500; ISO-3200; 1/250s x F5,6 shooting at 12fps

    As always, feedback welcome

Hi Phil, I think moving to mirrorless is very much a personal choice for which many have already taken up the challenge - with some great results. From all the reports I've read (many of them), there doesn't seem to be much difference in image quality or functionality between DSLR and mirrorless. I'm 100% happy with my Canon 7Dii DSLR (not changing any time soon) as I gather you are with your Panny. The images above at 1/250th shutter speed appear OK but for that type of photography I think a DSLR is better at freezing the motion with super fast shutter speeds. Mind you I'm comparing your bridge camera with a DSLR. I have the Canon SX-50HS bridge camera and it does a good job for the money. I think it will be a long time before DSLR production stops (if ever) unless the manufacturers really step up with features to convert the diehards.
A very interesting discussion which will probably go on for ages. Have you used the later model DSLRs as yet?

The lenses I have are EF and EF-S mount so would not be compatible with a new mirrorless camera and I don't want to be byeing a converter. If I was to venture into the mirrorless genre, I would probably give CAnon a miss and go for the Panasonic Lumix range. I have a friend who uses the Panasonic S1 and it's unbelievable and would be my first choice and a good fit for my use.

If the rumors on the new R model coming out soon are right this will get a lot of sales.

They are only rumours Hans. I awaited the release of the 7D3 and there were hundreds of rumours, specs etc - BUT - it was all bull...t. Canon are NOT releasing a 7D3. I'll believe it when it's on the shelves. I've read a few of the "rumours" and they are all different specs. Besides, if it does turn out to be true (doubtful) it will be too much money for little old me, maybe over $6000.
Working...
