I was inspired by all the beautiful flower images being posted lately so I decided to capture some of the colour in our garden. Unfortunately when I viewed the images in photoshop I was not happy with the sharpness.
These images are straight from the camera with no post processing at all. They are however screen captures from DPP to show the focus point (the red rectangle). I think that the camera is focusing to the rear of the point selected, so I may have to set up my focus chart and make some micro0focus adjustments.
    What do others think?

I think a micro focus adjustment may help John. Trial and error. I agree they all look OOF. It can also be caused by not having enough contrast to get sharpness in the focus area - just a thought.
It looks like you are using ScreenHunter for your screen grabs - Excellent choice!! You can set whether you want the cursor to show or not in the settings.

Thanks mate, I must have missed that option during setup.

Too many there to comment individually but in general I would think that F4 @ 70 mm a bit too shallow for that type of photography.

Shutter speeds in the range of 1/2000 - 1/6400, ISO 800. The aim was to get a really sharp image, that obviously didn't turn out as planned. Camera hand held, plants still growing in the ground.
I agree some of them don't look sharp at any point.
      IS was turned on.

Quite surprised at your selection of settings for floral photography. I would have opted for much slower shutter speed, much lower ISO and probably F8. You should still get separation from background at that aperture if working close up. Focus is important of course and I tend to use a zone setting where I can keep half pressing until I know I have what I want in focus. I don't know if you have a live view with your camera or not, but the Sony system I use is quite helpful in that respect.

Thanks for the feedback Greg. I have not done much floral photography, I guess it shows.
Canon 7D has live view, but the focusing is very slow.
Working...
