  • Hydroids

These delicate animals are related to jellyfish and draw in microscopic food particles from the surrounding water with the tenticles towards a centre digestive system. While they should be easy to photograph due to their attachment, they constantly wave around in the current and swell and go from fully open to partially closed in a single 'wave'. Hard not to burn out the highlights.

Panasonic LX5 F5 1/60 ISO 100. STTL flash and LED focus lights.

Underwater photography is way out of my depth to CC or pick to pieces Greg.

I don't even look at these photos to pick them to pieces. I don't know anything about underwater photography anyway. It is too interesting seeing all these underwater things I've never seen before, to worry about the lighting or other technicalities.

        Thanks for commenting anyway.

Although most of you would not have tried it, you may be able to suggest a subtle change in the way I present the shots which would improve the way I'm sharing this 'different' medium to make it more interesting.

Many years ago I did presentations of underwater slides to camera clubs and environmental groups. I found that people who don't dive quite often see things in a different light, so to speak, and ask questions you don't normally get at a dive club slide night. I've been enthusiastic about marine life for most of my life and it's nice to get some feedback and give information to those who've never been there.

        Cheers Greg.

Just 'tell it like it is' Greg .... an explanation as to what you are showing us (as you have done with this post) ..... 'garden' shots get lost on me .. too busy, too much colour and I have no clue what I am looking at. So perhaps a 'less is more' approach would be best.

I could comment on this photo from a show point of view, but is that what you want when you probably took the photo for totally different reasons - not to exhibit, but to share your world with us..

No I wouldn't put a shot like that up as show quality, but I am after comment.

I enjoy sharing, but in terms of quality underwater work, I don't expect miracles with the cheap compact outfit I use. I posted in Pick it to Pieces to see how others perceive what I do.
