now if you brought your right hand up from under the fly you could have squashed him in your hand

PITP Umm..you have the focus spot on........the white h/lights are a bit distracting ......maybe crop a bit tighter. Pretty good really Bard

Well Barb, your post has sat here in "Pick It To Pieces" for nearly 10 days, and no-one's done any picking. Well, I'm up for it.

Not that it's a 'bad' shot at all. Far from it. The composition, clarity and colors are pretty good.

But let me say first up that I reckon that the light is on the harsh side. Looks like bright sunlight? Always a challenge, and there are a few burn out spots on the flower to the left of the fly - or are they just white spots on the flower? The fly looks a bit hot too. Sometimes we just have to deal with the light as it is, but for flowers it is very often possible to be a bit more choosey with the light. Look at the light at different times of day, back light through the petals or whatever. Be on the look out for different light conditions. The shaft of light through the branches/leaves with a darker background is a good one to try.

Finally, I find the background a bit busy and distracting, even though it is nicely OOF. Takes the eye away from the main focus of attention.

Hope this helped. You did post in 'Pick It To Pieces'!!
        Charles

My indecision is final, I think.

Thanks Charles … yes photo taken in harsh sunlight (petals don't open unless sunny), the white spots near left wing tip are part of flower (white on petal higher up could be a 'blow out'), background 'highlights' are reverse side of leaves … this plant is in full sun pretty much all day (perhaps break out the brolly for future shots) … I love it for the colour and bugs that come to visit - tho not always co-operative … … have tried different angles … will experiment some more … all advice greatly appreciated
