I can't believe anyone hasn't told you the horizon is crooked

The colours are natural and I like the rocks in the foreground.

It is a pity that the pipe is slap bang across the city in the background. Would it have been possible to go a bit higher to try to get a gap between the pipe and the city?

Yes, the horizon police have been a bit slack here The buildings are also falling over.

I don't like to pick things to pieces, but you deserve some feedback for trying. May I suggest to anyone who posts here, try to explain why you took the photo, how you took the photo, (settings etc), and what you are trying to convey, and what YOU like and dislike about your photo, whether you think you succeeded, and how you think you could have done it better. Then we all might be in a better position to comment/critique, and maybe there would be more replies.

I'm assuming this is a pano crop? Nice colours - rocks add foreground interest. Not much happening in the sky or water. Middle of the day is probably the worst time to take pics, but I know it's not always possible to take pics at better times. The title is 'Sand-pipe' but the rocks dominate for me. But maybe you are actually interested in 'sand pipes' from an engineering point of view?, in which case we would have to look at it in a different light. It has happened to me enough times before, when commenting on photos, to dissuade me from doing much critiquing anymore.

I hope some of that helps - I also find it hard to pick my own photos to pieces at times - but if you have an informal/formal checklist that includes things like, 'horizon level?', 'how are the verticals? 'is it in focus' or 'have I over-sharpened it?', 'could I crop it better for composition?', 'no dust bunnies?', 'exposure good?', 'does it communicate what I'm trying to say?' etc

I hope I haven't come across as too harsh - I have been eternally grateful to people who have picked my photos to pieces in the past, (and are thankfully still doing it ) on various forums over the years - it's a great to way to improve - so well done for putting your efforts out there and asking for feedback.

(If you post another photo with a crooked horizon you will be in big trouble though )

Thanks for your reply. I was surprised too no-one commented as I knew it was a bit crooked but in that particular single frame it looked pretty ok. Stitched together with the others it certainly has a bend in it.

Still learning PS but I guess the thing to do would have been to do it again after adjusting that frame.

Couldn't have got any higher with out resorting to aircraft. I was standing on the end of the breakwall at the seaway.

There was not a lot of technical thought as a reason for taking the shot/s. (3 shot pano)

I'm pretty simple with my photography. If I like the look of something or want a record of it, I photograph it. If I like the result, I'll show it to others. If not I'll ditch it.

In this case, my family were playing on the beach (the tiny dots) and I wanted to check the water visibility off the end of the breakwall. (Us divers do stuff like that). I liked the look of the sandpipe with Surfers Paradise in the background with the rocks in the foreground.

Now as for the faults in the pano. I was not sure of the best approach to correct them. To me it almost looked as if it was taken with a much wider lense which gave some curvature to the earth and I could almost live with that. The leaning buildings do look pretty unnatural though. Even when leveling the horizon the buildings still look on a lean to me. Not sure what's going on there or what to do about it. (If anything).

I still use compact cameras, a couple of which have no manual settings. I accept that I'm not able to acheive the quality of the majority here who use high end equipment, however I would hope that my posts are accepted in the manner they are put. I'm in it for the enjoyment of photography and I love to see what others think of the images I like. (If you think the shot is bad.. tell me why you think so and what would you have done differently).

It's dissappointing to not even get a grunt in reply. (Had to go back 8 pages to find another in this topic with no comments)!

There you go Gregg Thanks. See, we didn't even know it was a 3 shot pano, shot with a P&S and that you have limited skills in fixing distortion - that's useful info. There is only one short sentence that tells us nothing

As per your other thread - if all this info (and more) had been included in the original post you may have received more help/suggestions/comments.

You may be in it for the enjoyment of Photography, but posting in PITP suggests you want to improve, (which is hopefully why we are all here). If not, as Nat suggests - maybe post in Snapshots.

People may still not respond here, for various reasons, but at least you will have given them every opportunity to do so

Fair comment Alan and thanks for that, I've had another crack at the sandpipe from another viewpoint this trip to the GC but can't do much with it until I get back home.

The whole point of me posting in PITP this time was to just get a response of some kind! Didn't seem to much happening anywhere else and I knew there were things to pick on with this image! I get the impression at times you need gear of a certain standard to be worthy of comment. (Hope I'm wrong)
