  • Not sure about this one ..........

Working on this style of pic - trying to get something atmospheric without obscuring the image too much - its a fine line. The other prob is the colour combo you can choose for sky and grass. Anyhoo this is what I came up for now, will probably keep working on it.....

I like it - reminds me of an old 1920s hand coloured pic - but I would suggest maybe cropping some off the top to make the tree more of the focus. Just my view.

I like the effect a lot. The colours work for me. If I had to crop, I'd take some off the bottom, not the top, but we all like different compositions.

Love it mate. Again, on the cropping - I wouldn't "crop" it (change dimensions), but I would move the ground down a bit so we get more sky. As said above, we all like different compositions haha...

Overall, great photo though, I really love it

I like it just as it is and I think the colours are beautiful. Agree with Terry it has an old world look and that tyre swing really adds to that.

I don't mind it, my first two thoughts when looking at were
            1) The scratched border area looks a bit too prominent, my eyes got drawn to this first rather than the smaller subject (tree and tyre), i think it should be the other way around.
            2) The main subject is just a fraction too small and/or placed too centrally (vertically speaking). A crop to bring it to teh intersection of the bottom third may work well and also make the grassed land area more in line with a thirds composition.

I like the details and clean-ness of the tree and tyre, however its a bit too clean and in contradiction to the rest of the image, possibly dialling back teh scratchness of the surrounds a bit will make this less obvious.

That said, I still like it and its a nice creative image of a minimalist scene

No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.

Lovely work Anna. The processing and concept are beautiful.

And it's so interesting to read the other comments.

For me, take a bit off the sky. The tree/horizon is a bit too central. Cropping the forground is not as effective for me, as the sky/clouds are not that strong. Beautiful, but not sufficient to be made a feature of.

And go easy on the scratchy border. Tricky to know when enough is enough.

When you took the shot, did you think about different compositions, and take a series of shots, one with more foreground, more sky/less forground and so on? It's a good idea to do that I always think. Sometimes it's hard to imagine what will work best with composition out in the field. I'd like to see a shot where you pointed the camera down further to include more foreground - maybe shot it from lower down too to show more of the grass. A bit of foreground interest - like a bit of grass sticking up! - in a shot like this can serve to add depth to an image.

My indecision is final, I think.

geez lots of latitude in this one Kath you could swing in any number of directions and end up with a smashing
result. I think the color palette as preneted is nice, especially that robin egg blue. The crop seems right as presented
but I have a little difficulty with the scratchy vignette...less scratchy less opacity?? dunno what the answer is
                  cheers

My thoughts, I suppose it is which end result you were looking for Kath, for instance a real lonely and lost effect could be to crop the grass right up to where the slope ends, just scrolling here for that look, secondly if you cropped hard on that beautiful sky down to the top of the left hand cloud you get a really harsh wind blown effect. I quite like it as is and I am really taken with the colours and effects, not to mention the wonderful subject in the first place, I think you have a winner in this one whichever way you decide to go.

                      I like it but think
landscape and or pano presentation would be stronger

I really like this effect you are playing with Kath. I wonder though if the vignette was slightly less obvious and maybe a bit wider so it really highlighted the tree, how would that effect it? The subject you have used here is terrific! As already mentioned, it harks back to an earlier time, even to when I was a kid.

Thanks for the input your opinions are very much appreciated. Will try reducing the scratchy vignette, I tend to over do it (it's my fav texture), I'll tone down the swing - good spotting Gerry, try a landscape crop and while I'm there try a few other crops as well as suggested. Yes while I was taking this shot I took 3 of the same scene, I was limited by how close I could get so only did left to right ie put the tree in left middle and centre, thanks Sejac, next time I'll remember to frame it a couple of ways, more sky would be good, bummer it's not that attractive. For interest sake I'll show you how the image started. This is the final pic I had in my brain so with A LOT of artistic license I got it......

                          Thanks again.

Ok reduced the opacity of the swing and scratchy vignette, tried landscape crop, sky crop and grass crop - I like all of the crops, but lean toward the grass and landscape one I think. (Its all very subjective!) I'm glad I got to use this photo, its not very good technically but the tree is awesome and really wanted to use it .

Grass crop IMO, gives the right 'Australiana' feel with the windswept Melaleuca being the main subject...
