Sandy, it's amazing the colour difference between this pic and your other one. I guess you are using your new tripod? Have you thought about using Aperture Priority then setting your f stop to say f4-6 to blur the background a bit and accentuate the foreground flowers some more, and check your shutter speed then too, it's a lot easier to experiment when using your tripod and you can try heaps of different combinations of exposures on the same scene, and pick the ones which work the best, whaddya think?
I like the plain background here which sets off the foliage.
Maybe you could include the bottoms of the leaves on the bottom right hand side.
Lucky you having nice roses.

Stand back and imagine your photo with a more pleasing back drop sandy. The photo of the flower/s is pretty good but the BG.............................
Most serious flower photographers will carry small bits of cloth/cardboard to use as back drops. They will also have some white/reflective material to balance light onto the flower/s.
In a wonderful book about nature photography that I read many years ago said we should photograph only the best quality flowers/plants/leaves and never be affraid to trim off the bad bits if possible.
Again it comes down to stop/look/study the subject.
Now can you see the other ugly bit.
And BTW: a little fine spray bottle of water is a must at times when photographing flowers/plant

Sandy, I can only echo Ian's comments, maybe slightly less tactfully..........the background ruins it completely. This would leap off the page if it had a matt black background. I suspect white wouldn't work as well with these colours.
A quick visit to a craft shop and a couple of dollars will do the trick.Andrew

thank you so very much I have Matt cardbord or did have before the move not sure if I still have it I also have some black and dark brown cloth that I use at times for indoors shoots like the one I did of my light bulb so I will def have a try with that it could be sometime before I get to shop that sell cardboard again but will also keep that in mind I have also been looking at other optitons online where you can set up outdoor backgrounds have not gotten back to the site yet I will have to cheek it out again they looked pretty neat to me so thanks so much for the tips and advice both Ian and AndrewAll Experts at anything were once beginners

The others are right. The background is rubbish.
Cut the roses, take them inside where you can prop them up somehow. Get a black jumper or black t-shirt. Put behind. Shoot somewhere light and protected. Next to a window, for example.
You have your tripod so set your aperture, nice low ISO. Delayed shutter, mirror lockup (Use live view - same thing) and the shutter speed just doesn't matter now. Can be seconds long if necessary!
OK. Get out there and do it again! And don't forget the composition.Charles
My indecision is final, I think.
