  • Pleas C&C other's Astrophotography honestly.

    It's no good saying,

    "WOW great pic!"
    "Amazing"
    "A real corker"
    "Stunning"

when it looks like a dropped pie.

Guys and gals, let me quantify that.

I am not a fantastic astrophotographer, but I am way better than I was and I am constantly seeking to improve. When I first started out I was so proud of my underexposed, oversaturated, grainy, out of focus and poorly tracked smudges in a rectangle of black.

Just because a nebula or galaxy is an amazing thing, it doesn't necessarily mean the photo of it is. I cringe when I flick back through my first attempts that I was so proud of. Folks telling me how wonderful my photo was when it was plainly terrible, did not help me one bit. Scathing C&C mocking my efforts was also not helpful.

To properly C&C an astrophoto, one must realise things like how difficult the target is to acquire, how heat affects long-exposures, the methods required to focus and track, then how best to stack and post-process them, etc etc...

Then it is a matter of commenting with that authority to help and encourage the person learning this very unique genre of photography.

Even without astrophotography experience, the average seasoned photographer can still offer good C&C on an astrophoto.

Here's a loose C&C blueprint: Start off with what you like about the photo, point out what it is letting it down, but only if you can offer suggestions on how to fix the existing image in processing or in-camera next time they attempt capture. Finish off on a high point if you can to encourage the photographer. This is particularly important if the photographer is obviously a novice and even more especially if the photo is terrible.

If the photo is fantastic, then please, articulate and wordsmith the praise listed at the top of this post until the cows come home.

Edit: I owe my current level of photography to countless fora whose members offered me helpful C&C and coaching. I am forever grateful.

    Have fun and bless ya's!

    Baz.

I probably looked at one of your photos and said that Barry (a long time ago), however I admire anyone that has the passion and stamina to track and stack photos of the cosmos! I know little about what is involved and do not think I would ever have the patience to do the same thing. But looking at your photos makes you appreciate the wonder of our universe. And there you are bringing it right to our doorsteps.

How can someone who has not spent the time or energy in doing what you do truly critique an astronomy photo? In many cases we have nothing to compare it against. It is not like a bird or a landscape that we can see and put into perspective and measure against similar photos and / or observations.

I for one have been impressed with your dedication and efforts to bring the universe to us. I appreciate a photo for its beauty and sometimes "perfection" just does not come into it. One of the best photos I have is of my young boy with his face covered in milo. It is out of focus so badly I just cringe at the photographic flair I have. But I cannot bring myself to delete it as at its heart the subject is more important. I think this rings true in your photos as well.

Yep understand completely Barry. I CC images I feel comfortable with - the others, I'll make a comment but let the OP know Im not "qualified" to comment on technical details. This is a generalization but you get the drift.

Good to have a reminder about CC......

(I have found that C&C on my pics has been good and for that, like you am grateful)

No-one said anything nice about my astrophotography. Which demonstrates that folks here don't always praise rubbish.
Not counting the time it took to read Barry's instructions, I spent a whole 30 seconds taking it.

this can of worms has been opened many a time. You know im a massive fan of yours barry, But the only person you can ask people to c & c serioulsy and honestly is yourself. If someone else wants to post a astro photo without crit its their choice. its all a personal preference. You have given me great crit in the past and its been honest and straight forward, its how i like but others will not like it at all. Cant make em all happy'

Please don't take this as a negative! I was trying to be positive!

You all know I only want to help, so take the post for what it was intended for, not to have a go at anyone, but to be helpful.

Also, if an astrophoto is out of focus, grainy or exhibiting other obvious mistakes, as I said, it doesn't take a seasoned astrophotographer to say so. Sure, if you don't feel qualified to offer how to fix it advice that's fine - and there's nothing wrong with encouragement, in fact I encourage encouragement.... but don't tell a novice that their crap photo is stunning when it's plainly not.

                  Just sayin is all...
