Last night I had clear skies and no wind so thought I'd give it another try. Not up to Toddy's standard.
D7000 Sigma 10-20mm @f/4 (max) 3200 ISO 30 secs. They still looked a bit underexposed in RAW

Looks pretty good. Found this interesting both with the size of the stars and the different colours. A faster lens is obviously an advantage. Must have a fiddle if it clears soon.

Good find Alan, thanks for sharing.

From what I've read choice of camera and lens is crucial. Apparently a Canon 7d is pretty much useless ( *sigh*) but the 7d mk11 is a ripper. Also a lens with low coma and chromatic aberration is important. I've used the Canon 17/55mm f2.8 and it's a no go for night shots. Worse than useless despite being reasonably fast.

And it's not all about cost as there are a couple of lens out there around the $400mark that are simply superb. Can't remember the brand of the top of my head but there is a cheap Korean lens that absolutely rocks the boat.
