K1W1 's post about using extension tubes reminded that I had tried some macros using a reversed 28mm lens on my D80 DSLR. The lens is a 28mm Super Takumar. The lens filter thread mounts to the reversing adaptor. I used flash with probably auto exposure but the lens was totally manual.
I was surprised at the results but it was very fiddly getting focus correct and, from memory, the working distance was very short.
These are both almost the full APS-C frame with very little cropping.
