  • The characters you meet in the park..

I saw two of these on my wanders around the park this morning. This one warming up not far from the path and another crossing the path.

Not a very interesting photo as its head is barely visible. This one was a decent size - a Red-bellied Black I think.

Well caught. Love these reptiles. Is this poisonous?

We have just one poisonous species in UK, the Adder. But they stay out of the way usually and are a little lazy.

Thanks Mark. Yes definitely venomous. Quite common around lakes and creeks.

From what I have read - frequently encountered but not aggressive, although they are responsible for a number of bites each year. They have caused few deaths but may put you in hospital. I think a bite would be a most unpleasant experience. Most dangerous for children and pets.

Yes, dogs tend to poke their nose where it might not be wanted...

Nice shot. Probably not something you'd like to surprise on a hike.

Thanks David. Not a problem as long as you see them or they move away.

Good capture Alan. They are an interesting snake and no deaths have been reported to date. They are in decline because of habitat loss and the reduced number of frogs, which are their favourite food. We don't see them in the West - they are endemic to the East of Australia.
