Seen on a recent walk in our local forest and captured with my phone. They were crawling along the track, over and over each other so they looked like a rotating flattened ball.

An excellent image - well done. I have seen these critters many times over the years but always known them as 'stink bug' catapillas ... so what do they really grow into??

Stink bugs do not have a larval stage but hatch into miniature stink bugs.

They aren’t flies but are more like wasps.
