Water Monitor at waterhole

G'day all

The Aussie term 'goanna' covers a range of similar animals, of which the Water Monitor is one. This fella had come out of the scrub to a waterhole - and the inland red dust was well stuck onto the skin. (The term 'goanna' appears a corruption of the European use of 'Iguana' from Spanish explorers in South America)

Fabulous detail and colour and it has a real interesting look on it face like "I think this is my best side, don't you?"

Had one come around at lunch time every day to deprive the ants of the scraps we put on the antheap.

They look very similar to the bungarras I came across daily in the NW of WA. I'm sure they are related. They are very dangerous critters as they'll run straight up and over you and cut you to pieces with those razor sharp claws. I definitely used to monitor them from a distance.
