It works! These are lovely shots John. Great detail and colours. How close can you focus at 600mm? Just an idea but try f:11 - f:16 for a greater DOF AND seeing as they are weeds, perhaps you could have snapped off the one in the background in #2? Just sayin'

I just did a test with the Tamron 18-400. Auto focus (front of lens to subject) works at minimum 140mm (5.5") at 400mm zoom and 150mm (6") at 18mm. It can get pretty close for a zoom lens.
This is the Tamron specs from their website and it's confusing!! They say different.

        Close Focus
Specified Min Focus Distance 17.72” (450mm)
        Tested Min Focus Distance (Wide / Long) 14.21” / 16.14” (361mm / 410mm)
        Maximum Magnification (MM) 0.34x

I will do a test with the Siggy tomorrow and publish the results.

And of course ... if those specs are correct as to minimum distance, then an extension tube could have it competing with Greg's 18-400 :P

Excellent shots with soft light and smooth backgrounds. You have a very slight advantage over me - the minimum focus distance on my 500 PF is 3m. You can get a little closer with a narrower angle of view. I still prefer my macro lens for close-ups.

Thanks Alan, these were a couple of "throw away" shots I took while waiting for some ducks to land on the lake. Ended up being keepers. Lucky for me because the ducks kept flying over to a different lake.
    Working...
