  • Spider

Not sure what brand of spider but thought the web and background colours made for an interesting backdrop.

Again, fabulous colours Mick. I think it's a Large bodied-small headed-long legged-web hanging spider commonly found in some parts of Australia.

At a guess I would say it's an Orb Weaver which you photographed beautifully.

The blue and orange really work well together Mick.

Just enough detail in the web, so your choice of f/5.7 with 400mm must have been correct?

              Well spotted

I think at the time I might have been chasing a black-faced cuckoo shrike for some in flight shots so this was purely an opportunistic snap then back to the main game with no regard given to settings other than "is the needle somewhere near the middle, yep, that'll do, now, where has that shrike gone"

This is a full frame, no crop, so far too close for a smaller aperture to make any significant difference anyway but must admit I gave that no thought at the time. It was the early morning light that caught my eye as much as the spider or web.

With hindsight a smaller aperture and stepping back a few metres to increase dof would've been an intelligent decision to make, so well spotted by you good sir!

That's exactly how I operate too Mick - I often fail to check what my settings are. I just fire away a few shots to get something, (because I've forgotten what I was taking pictures of the night before), and then check to see what it looks like - a handy professional technique I've developed, and one which you are already familiar with by the sounds of it

                  Carry on..
