  • An outcrop from Australia's Inland Sea from millenia ago

    G'day all

In central South Australia just north of Coober Pedy, these dramatic upthrusts remain from the days of the great inland sea, est'd at 10~15,000 years ago

1)- one of many mesa-like protrusions standing proud from the surrounding countryside

2)- locally called 'the two dogs' these outcrops are very different colours and types of sedimentary materials

    As always, feedback welcome

Love those inland colours I'm sure I will see them again. Google reports it at 70 million years ago. . Hope you get to the painted desert.

          G'day Hans

A lot of the geological upthrusts for the Flinders Ranges took place in the 30 to 60 million yrs ago, but the "Inland Sea" drained -I am told- between 10 and 20,000 yrs ago more or less at the time when Bass Straight was formed. All thru central Oz and including Uluru + KataJuta outcrops, even today one finds sea shells embedded in the sandstone rocks
