  • Cloudy morning on the coast

Just a few from yesterday morning. I was hoping to get some shots in early morning sun but the 'partly cloudy' forecast didn't happen until later in the day. These are at Brunswick Heads, NSW.

All with D800 and Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art

A great set of images Alan, with #3 being my favourite. Do you use the Siggy 35 Art very often, it looks to give excellent results.
Do you know what the black dots centre left are?

Thanks John. The lens does a good job but I don't use it a lot. I'm often going wider or opting for the 24-120 for maximum flexibility.

The black dots are surfers - there were four or five of them out there. Here's a crop from a different image.

I thought that they may be surfers, but wasn't sure. I have the 30mm (~ 50mm in FF) f1.2, but like you I prefer the convenience of a zoom. Either my 17-70, or 24-105, both Siggy's. I should really make an effort and go out with only the 30mm, it is a great lens and the f1.2 allows me to achieve great bokeh.

Good set Alan. Lovely light in all. I'm not in you guy's league with lenses - my best for bokeh is the nifty fifty 1.8. Also the Tamron 60mm 2.0 but since the 18-400 got glued on, I've not used any other glass. Maybe I should.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Thanks Isac. I think it’s worth trying just a prime lens from time to time. I don’t see much differences in the images, but you have to think differently.

I think that the main reason that I don't use my 30mm prime is that I'm too lazy to take the time and effort to move myself into position. The zoom is just too easy to compose "where you stand".

      G'day Alan
A wonderful set of images matey - they go down well with me as they seem so similar with the Forster-Tuncurry river outlet + surfers that I see so often
#1 & #2 particularly grab me - clouds + water + bloke in red + wave actions ..... yes you've done well with this lot!

It is #3 for me as well but I do like the sky in both 1 and 2 as well. It is funny how some people get hung up on their wouldnd't have anything less than a 2.8 or You can't use f22 because of defraction. Wankers everywhere I suppose. Every time I use a prime it only seems for a short time about twice a year. Even then I have to check if I used it with exif as I can't tell. Old age I suppose.

Thanks Hans. Yes there’s a fair bit of nonsense and snobbery around.
