Old timber posts often seem to come with especially created nooks and crannies ... and occasionally man-made ones as well

Pretty sure that these posts had been used before / elsewhere for another project and these holes / gaps were left over from that previous use, therefore making themselves "available" for something new

Well spotted Phil and a lovely image. Those posts were probably used in another fencing project. They look like post and rail cutouts.
