  • Overhead is often much the same - but different

    G'day all

Overnighting at Lake Cargelligo in central nsw at the moment and decided it was time (again) to do a startrails pic over the lake. Here's the result

    200 images of 30 secs; F2,8; ISO-800; camera @ 24mm FF equiv

Also got a satellite plus several meteorites - not always seen in my pics

    As always, feedback welcome

    Phil

It does look unreal Phil. I've not toyed with this concept, I'm not sure it's for me - I've never been inspired to give it a go. I have written an action in Photoshop that does much the same thing but I guess it's not quite the same as actually getting out there with the timelapse.

      G'day mate

Thx for the thoughts .... and while I know that PS can be tweaked to do heaps of things, sometimes 'the real thing' always seems to produce a better job
However, I would be interested to see one of your PS "star-streaks"

I have never tried this so apologies if the question is easily explained.
Why are some of the trails not contiguous? There are quite a few in the upper left particularly that seem to jump instantly to the right then in some cases later on jump back to the left. Is that a small movement in the tripod or some other issue or is it just the way these trails always appear?

This may help K1W1. I found this an interesting read and also how to set up the camera for best results.

Could it be that the stars are various distances from Earth so that when the image is captured, some stars will be in in the frame longer than others?
It's fascinating how the universe moves about.

          G'day K1W1

The tripod and camera were just outside the motorhome and every so often I would pop out to listen for the click-click as it changed from one exposure to the next. All okay there. Normally this continues until the battery goes flat some 90 to 150 minutes later

But on the night I did this, I came out one time to see a "dog squirt" on the vehicle tyre near the tripod and .... well the bugger also bumped the tripod on his way through, and by the looks of it, on his way back again

Also like the colours. There are a lot of different shades there. Love a mind boggeling universe. It is a shame we don't live long enough to understand it.

Done with my Photoshop action. It's only an alternative to the real thing for those that don't get to see it in real life

I do agree Hans. The trails are always centred and that's what this version produced, but it can be used to offset like Phil's image. The result of the action is always going to be different on other images - depends on the size of the stars and quantity. But it's all good fun. PS - I think Phil's work has been cropped to offset the central rotation.
