    #56, 57, 58- 2011- In the shearing shed

Back in 2011 during the running or one of our weekend photo workshops in western Queensland we were invited to visit a local sheep station where shearing was in progress. It was a 300km round trip from the town of Longreach to the property of about 16,000hectares / 40,000 acres holding around 12,000 sheep. The shearing team of 15 people were mostly New Zealanders who run a contract shearing business, travelling across the country during the season.

    a) 2- shearers in action

    b) throwing the fleece onto the sorting table + squirting anti-fungal stuff to protect sheep from parasites, blow-fly, ticks and lice.

    c) the semi-trailer loaded with around 280 wool bales weighing approx 42,000kg

Impressive shots Phil. My youngest son drives B-Doubles from Toowoomba to Longreach and Darwin 6500km round trip so he'd know more about the outback than I would.

      #61, 62, 63- Startrails from Downunder

When we travel around Australia for months at a time, and with TV being so full of crap from Hollywood these days, I often setup the camera for a star trail. Typically these images have from 75 to 400 exposures, usually 20 or 30secs each and the JPGs are stacked using 'www.Startrails.de' software, a really beaut and easy to use bit of kit. Camera WB is always 'sun', ISO-800/1600, lens set to 1x zoom (24mm FF equiv) and the Panny superzoom / bridge camera does the rest while I'm inside the motorhome reading a book and sipping something 'nice'.

      a) taken under a full moon

10 images of 30 seconds before stacking

      b) lights of a town some 30km away from my campsite

300 images of 30 secs before stacking

      c) with some clouds floating overhead during the night - camera pointing to south celestial pole

100 images of 30 seconds before stacking

Cheers Phil. Here in WA it's just been business as usual for our family because the Covid-19 has been under control and not spreading like in the east. I still can go to the shops, walk the dog and also have friends around now so all is good. Unfortunately, being in a band is a bit of a pain, because the pubs are still shut for large crowds. Back to normal soon I hope. Back to normal soon for you too I hope.

        #70, 71, 72, Aussie Road-trains ... the "18-wheeler" trucks that criss-cross the outback daily

Around the world there are many people interested in trucks and heavy transport - here are three to contemplate.
Highly skilled Aussie truckies manage these monsters daily ~ and I'm sure that aussie members here will have seen these fellas as you travel the country

        a) fully loaded, this fella pulls 142 metric tonnes per load over a 600km route to the port

        b) fully loaded, 120,000 litres of mixed fuels being delivered to an outback iron-ore mining complex

        c) known as a "B-Quad" these fellas are the general goods delivery trucks for the outback, sometimes covering 3,000km per trip

Thems are big loads Phil! Without these guys we'd all be living in overpopulated cities. Those B-Quads really move some freight. They've only been on the road since August 2018 (I think) - earlier in the mining industry. I'm sure my young bloke would love to get behind the wheel of one to do his 6500km trip every week.

#86,87,88, 2015- after dark journey through a busy port

The city of Port Hedland in northern West Australia is one of the world's busy shipping hubs with thousands of bulk carrier ships coming and going annually. Mostly iron ore and various chemicals (not coal) it is an all-day / every-day operation. The Missions for Seamen operate a water taxi service for crewmen to come ashore and video link talk to families around the world. The water taxi also takes tourists, and here's images from their 9pm run taking seamen back to their ships
