Weekend sunrise mission. Didn't get the conditions I was after so had to improvise.

Mother nature does not always play well with others does she Toddy? I feel your frustration, many a time I've headed down to a few of my favourite places on Westernport Bay for some sunset/sunrise photos only to come back disappointed. You've done pretty well with what you had to work with mate, but #5 is an absolute cracker. Looks like a bit of HDR going on, if so very tastefully done.
I had to look it up on Google Maps, were these taken at the Boneyard?

Thanks John. Not at the boneyard. Just around the corner at the old quarry. It's an immensely popular spot but winter does keep the hordes away.

      That's a plus for winter

Oh and #2 is a HDR merge. All the others are a single image.

Thanks Todd, nice processing on all of these images even if they weren't exactly what you were looking for.

#2 and #4 for me Todd. Colours are amazing and the scenes are breathtaking. The framing of the rocks in #4 is well done - lovely balanced shot. I'm not quite sure about the sky and cloud colours in #4 and #5 but good images all the same.

      Thanks Greg.
Too much blue in the sky? I already desaturated blue. Maybe should have gone further. Could have adjusted the temp further too.

I'll say #2 & #5 but really all are good

Good to see you have thought about the temp settings. Changing it in-camera is a quick way to fix the colour casts. I'm a big fan of it but not many use it. I like to dial in my own temp (K) for different lighting situations. I think the blue colour cast was very strong in #4 so I used that to play with. I changed the temp sliders +30 to yellow and +70 to magenta and it worked OK. My process (below) is just a Color Balance adjustment layer and I set the sliders as shown below. It makes a huge difference. I'm sure Lightroom has these adjustments. I hope this is helpful for you Todd. Cheers.

Thanks Greg. That might be a little bit far but I will have another go at adjusting the temp.

Interesting Greg. To me your edit showed a red colour cast. I'll have another look at it.

Sorry Todd, after I looked, I did push the red a tad too far. I used another method in PS which does a true colour correction by finding the true white points, black points and mid grey and I noticed the red did drop. Do you have a way of doing colour correction in Lightroom? (I only use PS).

No need to apologise Greg. I tend to just use my eye and adjust the colour to what looks right to me. Sometimes the histogram helps. Sometimes it looks like a Richter scale in a 10.7 earthquake.

Much better Todd. The blue cast is gone. I have a version of Lightroom 2 which is pretty old but I do have a play on the odd occasion. I'm a bit stuck in PS because I've been using it since the first release! I'll post the colour corrected one for you to compare.

Here's the colour corrected version using Black, White and Grey points, which is supposed to give the best result. It takes a bit of time, probably why not many use it.
Because everyone is different, let's have some fun and see what others think. Thanks for letting me play Todd, it's appreciated.

Firstly Todd, I don't do a lot of printing now but when I do I print from Photoshop and I get very close colours. I usually have to brighten slightly but it's trial and error to get it right. That price for the Philips 243V7QJAB 23.8" FHD IPS Monitor with Speakers is very cheap for an IPS panel so I'd want to compare the specs to different makes to see if it measures up. I can't see the portrait swivel on it, which I love. I'd get the best you can afford.

John, I have had it for a few years so it's probably obsolete now. It's still a great monitor but the newer ones are probably as good if not better, like the Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor: U2412M
