Never seen this place so quiet Alan.
I'm not doing much new photography at the moment, have just got my hands on an A2 printer (canon pro 1000) and calibrated monitor (Eizo ev2455) and am busy working my way through my old images in preparation for my first exhibition. Slowly getting my head around printing and presentation of the images and it's very time consuming.
When the wet season kicks into gear I'll be seriously getting back into shooting and I'd be expecting my participation level here to increase somewhat. I'm planning to have two exhibitions next year, possibly three and this wet will see me shooting like never before!
But so much to learn and do before the first prints are hung on the wall, it's all quite daunting to be honest and at this early stage I feel completely snowed under I'm assuming it will become exciting and fun down the track a bit once I gain some confidence and things start to take shape.
That's a beautiful image btw, with sunrise/sunset images the less colour the better the result imho. There are exceptions of course, but I find this style more appealing and thought provoking than a colourfest.-----------------------------------------------------

Thanks Mick. You are a brave man to tackle the complexities of high end printing by yourself - and you still have to delve into the art of framing
Good luck with the exhibitions and glad to hear you will be out shooting again soon
Cheers
edit. btw - how did your Opera Shoot go?Last edited by Alan; 04-12-2016, 03:31 PM.

The printing is hard work, much harder than I thought it would be but I'm getting there slowly. Started with cheap A4, then quality A4, then quality A3 that turned out ok(ish) and the A2 Ilford paper should be here end of next week. So the mistakes are becoming more expensive! And I've already had to order some new ink cartridges without having produced a frame worthy print yet.
The printer is a hungry beast.
I've decided to bypass the framing until later. For exhibition I'll be mounting all prints on 5mm foam board, I'm confident they will present well if I take care with the mounting. Not bothering with archival quality, they just have to look good and survive the exhibition. I have a friend who will deal with framing for customers, if I have any customers.
If someone doesn't want to pay for a frame I'll offer a borderless mount on archival foam board with protective spray, much cheaper than traditional frame behind glass.
The opera gig was a flop from a photography viewpoint. The follow spot died an hour before showtime, the lighting guy was lazy and had skimped on the lights, he had 'holes' all over the stage and generally it was a poor effort by him overall and I certainly wasn't the only person who noticed. Pretty sure he's done his last gig in Broome. With world class opera performers on stage a B grade effort is not acceptable. He was flown up from Perth especially for the gig, hope he enjoyed the flight home is all I can say
I managed to get a few good frames but nothing to write home about.-----------------------------------------------------

Bypassing the framing sounds like a good, (and money saving ) idea
Ink carts are where they make their money I think. Might be worth sourcing third party carts until you get the hang of it? Or maybe not as it will add and another variable?
Have fun
Sorry about the Opera lighting

This printer has 80mil tanks @ $65 so not too bad. But there's 12 tanks so yes, bad lol.
Not sure of costings yet but an A2 print should use consume about 2mil, maybe.
The big cost is when you turn on the printer for the first time and the lines to the print head are primed..half of each tank disappears. Third party ink is a bit of a no no I believe, can clog the print head and that's $500 straight up.
I'm loving it but it's scary for my wallet.

I have been looking at doing some framing. not found a lot but this may be of some use. http://justframekits.mylams.com/wp-c...4/11/PF7_B.jpgBetter a full bottle in front of me
than a full frontal lobotomy.

Thanks for that Hans. I plan on making my own frames down the track. Wood from bunnings, coat of varnish and we're good to go. A friend of mine is a framer who'll sell me the glass at a good price.-----------------------------------------------------
