  • Wolfe Creek Crater

Kinda takes ones breath away just being here. A 50,000 tonne rock travelling at 15 kms per second smashed into planet Earth here about 300,000 years ago. Some fragments were found up to 4 kms away.

At 850 metres across it the second largest crater on Earth.

    G'day mate

Puts Hiroshima in the 'small bikkies' bag ... let's hope another one never repeats this big-bang

      G'day Phil, been a while...

The mass of the Sun and Jupiter protect us a bit, apparently. Their stronger gravitational forces mean they take most of the big hits but it's only a matter of time...hopefully lots and lots of time

Yowzers that was a big rock Mick. Great spot to visit though. Have you walked around it?

Nah, didn't walk around the rim. Thought about walking across as there's a path down but my knees said no.

Hey Mick do you know what the largest crater is? I've been to Gosse Bluff crater in NT and was sure it was well over a kilometer across.

            Dodgy phone pano

I think the largest is in Arizona USA.

With regard to Gosse Bluff, a quick google has exposed my error.

"Wolfe Creek Crater is the second largest crater in the world from which meteorite fragments have been collected."

Thanks for the correction Todd, and thanks for the heads up on Gosse Bluff as I'd never heard of the place. My bucket list has a new addition!

Ah there you go. Makes sense. I believe Gosse Bluff is much older than Wolfe Creek Crater too. It sort of has a ripple effect with multiple concentric circular ranges around the impact point. If you're going that way be sure to stop off in Palm Valley. Amazing little oasis.

Impressive - it would have been a Big Bang. Not a place to have set up camp

Hey, look at the pretty lights in the sky...

                          Wow, that's stunning...

Why is it getting dark so early...

                          What's that noise...

Great shot LC, notice you're another 7D user, great choice (insert thumbs up smiley). I see from the exif data you shot at 8mm. Was that a prime lens or a zoom? I have a Sigma 8-16 UWA.

                              Cheers John.

Love the 7D, it's handled years of abuse in dusty conditions

Siggy 8-16mm for that shot, it's a beaut lens that I don't use nearly enough.

Also have a 17-55mm, 100-400mm and 70-200 f/4. The 70-200mm is in a class of its own, I use it at music gigs almost exclusively and it delivers brilliant IQ .

Have a Sigma DP2 Merrill as well and it's a beast, love it to bits but it's a fragile little thing that is difficult to use. The 7D is tough as old boots
