The local lake - 1

Off to the Lake today to see if the swans are going to raise a few cygnets. All looks good with the 2 swans taking it in turns to sit on the eggs.

Very similar to the Lake we have at the Arboretum. Our cygnets are now two out of five and one of those is twice the size of the other. Not sure what's going on there but it must be getting the lion's share of the tucker!

Yes and both from the same clutch. A fortnight ago they were a similar size.

Lovely photo Greg and it looks a peaceful place. Your 2 cygnets are clearly brother and sister. When they are first hatched, male and female cygnets start off at around the same weight, about 220g. You will hardly see any difference until two to three weeks. That's when the males start to grow faster than the females. When they start to fly, the males can weigh as much as 25 to 30% more than the females. At this point they will be larger as well.
