  • Waiting for Rain

This is our lake in Wattle Grove WA which is home to a huge variety of bird life. Unfortunately our shire which has just spent a massive amount of money (WOW I wonder where they got that from?) on trees, pathways, little foot bridges, nesting boxes and signage BUT they didn't dredge the lake to at least try to retain some of the water when it fills again. It's a disgrace to see this wonderful lake in this condition. Am I being silly, just an old grump or should I march on City Hall?

#1 - Panorama view - I do think the brown earthy tones are quite attractive and really bring this scene to life.

#2 - A bit closer to see the marvelous texture of the lakes bed. I'm really in tune with the craquelure effect, in fact I'm getting quite excited just thinking about it.
You might be able to see a glimmer of water but with a little luck I'm sure it will be gone soon.

Certainly could do with some rain. Not much point in dredging though unless the bed is pure clay to some depth or the water will just soak in.

However it is very shallow for the area, and evaporation would be a real issue. Any creeks or springs nearby that could be re directed?

We have a lake at the Arboretum where I do volunteer work for birdlife, and it's supplied by redirecting a creek about 500 Metres away and the level is maintained by the height of the outlet.

Unfortunately Greg, the only way it fills is when it rains - there's no feeders. There's a lot of clay in this area and I think digging it out a bit would work. We all built in this area knowing the clay was there and the developers built it up with good soil from local horse farms to over a metre. Plants and lawns are loving it. Here's a sky shot of it. My house is the one with the red roof on the corner and has a large patio, 8x4 workshop and a shade sale which covers the pool - easy to find, not far from the lake.

The rain came this weekend. It was a good steady fall that lasted 24 hours and this is the result.

All we need now is 48 hours of constant rain and it should be good to go!

Thanks Greg. The forecast is for nice sunny days for a while, so the lake will probably dry up again. There's always winter - which should fill it up again.
