Large Burl

I noticed this large burl while I was taking a stroll through Kaarakin. Very big and worth a fortune.

Get a few bowls out of that one.. pass the chainsaw!

Bowls are very difficult to make because of their different softness in the timber, but they are splendid when done right. Huge amount of clocks are made though. After the smoothing of the surface, they pour the epoxy over it about 2mm thick and the finish is exquisite.

They are much more common from burls in Tassie. I guess the timber is more consistent in hardness. I've seen some beautiful examples.

That's a beauty Isac. I wouldn't mind that sitting in my shed

Probably a coffee table or two. Maybe a combination of Iron and Wood

Amazing how something so ugly can become a think of beauty. Does it hurt the tree to cut them off it?

Thanks Phoenix. if the burl is removed from a living tree it becomes an open wound and will never mend itself. Different story from a dead or harvested tree like in our south west. The jarrah seems to produce the most fantastic looking things like clocks etc. As I had my retail business in Manjimup (a while back), I would often sell gorgeous clocks in my store for my customers. I do have one in my bar here at home.
