  • Dead Mangrove tree

Found this tree on a beach walk at low tide and thought it interesting.

Great image Mike. lovely contrasting colours and it has a bit of a minimalistic look about it. Good detail in those lower branches too. Do you think a bi more water would make it come good? I'd crop it from the top to just under the top cloud to give a pano look. I only noticed that when I had it only showing just under the cloud when I was typing this and thought, nice pano, then realised it had a top section with another cloud.

Well, the water will be three metres deep once the tide comes in, we'll see how it goes

Good thought on the pano Isac, had it myself, great minds and all that but decided against because to me the sky mirrors the vastness and emptiness of the landscape.

You've probably used it before Mick, so to keep us both happy, if you used Content-Aware Scale to expand the sides a bit, it would give the pano look and keep all of the sky as well. I've got a tut on it in teach me section for Photoshop. Just a thought. It's such a wonderful image. I had a go at it and used the ROT for the horizon and tree trunk and I thought it looked OK. Cheers. Definitely an Isac Wallhanger contender.

Good thoughts Isac but I'm not keen on altering my images to that extent. Just a personal thing, others can do as they please.

Don't mind adding a little bit here or there but prefer not to drift too far away from the original with regard to content unless the image is clearly 'artistic'.

I like the vacant look of it all.

How far does the tide recede? It must be very shallow for a long way out, we have 3.5 metre tides here but they don't go out very far.

Very nice image Mick. I tried cropping down below the cloud, but it makes the tree look too cramped, I prefer it like it is, or cropped above the cloud.
        Cheers, Brad.

Tides here are well over 10m and go out generally a 1km or so but in some areas up to 4km or further, depends where you are on the coast. It's a pretty spectacular coastline that is ever changing. Some of my favourite camping spots are only accessible during neaps and you really don't want to misread the tides.

Pano and space both work for this I think.
The image has such lovely balance with the tree to the right and clouds on the left.
Glad you didn't convert this to BW. There is control in this restrained colour palette even though the predominant ones are nearly on opposite ends of the spectrum they also add to the balance as the white and blue repeat from low to high.

Haven't been there, not done that.

Captured this late morning so the colours were subdued and I think that has worked quite well. Don't normally shoot much during the middle of the day and I sat on this one for a couple of weeks before I decided to process.

Your insightful comments have given me plenty to think about Jo, thanks for that.

Very nice. I too like the tones in this and it's a much more interesting dead mangrove than we get here - lots more branches which gives it a pleasing shape.
