  • Big Red in the Simpson desert

May not look that big in this image but it's a 40m climb to the top, took me three goes and had to deflate tyres to 12/14psi. Poor old hilux was not happy!

For some perspective (the dune in the background is "only" 25m).

Couple of b&ws from the top. These dunes run for hundreds of kilometres and are the longest in the world.

Interesting shots Mick. Did you have to cross many dunes or was this just a side trip. I presume the 'main drag' runs between them, but I guess you have to get out of the 'valleys' at some stage?

I still think I prefer the colour versions, but I think B&W works well for more abstract ones. But that's just me.

Did you play around with shapes and curves etc?

    Keep them coming

There are 1100 dunes in the Simpson to negotiate, most of them much smaller of course but a few hundred of them are 10 to 25m. dunes run north/south, track runs east/west. Non stop dunes all the way Alan. Big Red is the last (and largest) to be crossed before Birdsville.

The gap between the dunes varies from a hundred metres to a kilometre or so but no respite from them. About 5 days driving time, 4wd always engaged with about a third of that time spent in low range generally cruising at 25kph with the occasional burst up to 40kph. It's a heck of a ride!

Still playing around with the processing but am prefering b&w at this stage.

Amazing! Such desolate country - the bones below the sign say it all.
