I've been sneaking across the boarder the last week or so chasing light and patterns...early starts, but I reckon it's worth it?







I've been a bit quiet here lately, hopefully have more to post soon...Cheers folks.

Maybe a sliver more off the bottom of #1?

Might be a bit tricky trying to remove the green flares on the sand in #2

Love the footprints leading the eye into the scene in #3

This is exactly the kind of stuff I plan on getting stuck into when I hit the deserts. Love it.

Ok, I'll share a couple of thoughts because I can see some serious potential here.

#1. Needs light and shadow in the foreground to make the image work. Featureless sky, then wonderful background, then large featureless foreground. Only about a quarter of the image grabs my attention. I can see a hint of light hitting the foreground dunes on the right, needs plenty more of that.

What a fantastic landscape! Well worth an early start to capture this.


#2. The sun is the dominant feature when it could, instead, be the light and shadow on the dunes. Good subject matter here Gaz but I reckon shoot from a different angle and keep the sun out of frame as much as possible. Some wonderful patterns to work with there, great possibilities with light and shadow but I find the sun overpowering.

Shooting into the sun is a great thing to do but not sure if it's working in this particular image. Maybe fire the shutter just before the sun appears over the horizon, use tripod because slow shutter will be required. That's what I'm seeing anyway, everybody's different.



#3. Best of the three I reckon. Good concept, great control of the flare from the sun. Reckon I'd like to see more of what's on the left and less of what's on the right, just looking a bit busy/messy on RHS. Potential there for a really clean image with the dune as a feature then the trees way off in the background. YMMV.

All been said above but definitely worth the early rise, it's an amazing landscape. Who needs to go to Africa/Middle East to capture amazing sand dunes.

Thanks everyone for helping to fine tune.
I plan on revisiting there a few more times over the coming months and maybe try the evening light as well for a change?
I also liked #3 the best, I'll have a play later and see if I can't swap out the sky to add some interest then re-post if it works.
