  • The lonely cow

Typical Kimberley landscape, captured this one the way home from my recent camping trip. Thought the lone cow added some interest to the landscape.

Dry harsh country out there! "A little similar to here atm... minus the t/mounds"
I like the bands of light but the cow looks soft, is that from the heat?

Looks very desolate. Personally I don't think the cow, being so small in the frame, adds anything. I'm more drawn to the termite mounds.

Agree with Gabby re drawn to the termite mounds ..... my eye goes to the mounds in focus, especially the one on the left with the companion shrubbery

This could be because I don't see termite mounds very often ...

Early morning(ish) so not that hot Gaz, put it down to operator error. I wanted the mounds to be in focus and probably focused too close. Still feeling my way with landscapes and getting the dof correct is not one of my strengths.

Been a little bit of rain here but not enough to get things happening yet.

Fair call Gabby. I've visited this area many times trying to capture those mounds as I feel there are plenty of great opportunities but haven't really nailed any shots I'm particularly happy with. This is one of my better efforts thus far but need to spend more time here to get a real feel for the place.

Hi Mick Have a look at this App for calculating DOF. Its a really useful piece of software. SetMyCamera.com .You set your camera and then the you can set the focal length of your lens the f stop being used and the software shows you the depth of field you can expect, for old farts like us it can be calibrated to either meters or yards, right down to cms and inches if so desired. Its compatible with smart phones and Tablets. I forget the cost but its not very expensive and quite useful

Good to see that kind of country Mick. Very different to what I'm used to.

Recon if you pitched your tent over one of those mounds you'd get a feel for the place real quick!

Hope ya don't mind...was waiting for the beer to cool down and decided to have a little play.
I've moved some of the mounds with the shovel and added a little sky.

Thanks Gaz, I appreciate you taking the time to edit.

What your edit has done is make me realise that I should have waited till the cow had advanced a few more metres till it was central in the "road" created by the termite mounds.

I'll be heading back this way before too long I hope and will revisit this area, just across the road the concentration of mounds is significantly higher.
