  • Volleyballers and poodles went home before the sunset.

Playing with a wide angle lens. Wish I'd carted the tripod down the cliff face because I'd either have had more shots worth sharing or plummeted to my death!

I would have gone home. Waste of time really. No poodles AND no Swedish Bikini Villeyballers.

Except I would have maybe missed this brilliant shot. (I would have been looking for volleyballers, or poodles. What a loser.)

Stunning shot Jo. Perfect as is. Except the RH edge is a bit dark. Lighten a bit?

My indecision is final, I think.

Oh yeah, it is dark! Thanks for pointing that out. I will get on to it.
I guess I could have followed the volleyballers climbing up the cliff face..nothing but perky Swedish bottoms stretching their lycra..not much of a view really.

I though the Title would pique the interest of our resident Vollyball aficionado and poodle fancier.

I was just about to reply and mention the dark RHS as well - snap

Love the light and lines and composition and foreground rocks. The seagull is just icing on the cake.

Placing the horizon centrally was a courageous decision, but I can't see any other way to do it.

Poodles and vollyball players have an aversion to fading light. It's a well known fact.

      Cheers

      edit meant to ask,

Why did you take it at 1/4secc and f/22 without a tripod? Going for max DOF? And how did you not get camera shake?

The image is naturally dark on one side due to the clouds.

I tried darkening the left and lightening the right without making it look unnatural.
Reduced the cyans and upped the yellows which appears to have frightened off the seagull.

That's a different photo - the seagull has also gone home now

I preferred the light on the LHS in the first one. Sky looks a bit blown here.

You could crop some of the RHS off so the seagull fell on the 1/3's line and that would remove some of the darker and somewhat bland sky?

          Cheers

Alan did what I was going to suggest in the way of a crop, and I like that combination of colours but would have retained that degree of darkness rather than lighten it in the crop. It has lovely depth. You did well with the hand hold!

#2 has a bit much magenta for my taste.

I didn't lighten it Greg - only a straight crop - must have been something in the upload? Yes, It does look lighter in comparison

Beautiful shot Jo. I personally don't mind the darkness on the right, there is also some on the left and it guides the eyes through the lighter area. The shape of the clouds perfectly points to the sun also. Lovely pastel shades in this shot and so jealous of those colourful and interesting rocks to use as foreground interest. I've often used my tripod as a walking/balance stick when descending steeper areas.

Thank you PP for your thoughtful critique, getting an image where the light is balanced evenly during a sunset is a tricky call. Went down those rocks with the tripod and thought of you. One stage I contemplated just chucking the tripod into the sand but the camera gear and I survived! Sadly the tide was high and the sun died though.

Can I just say - I love it. Wide angles are great and I'm yet to give my 10mm a good workout. Excellent for hand held - but it should be with your great capabilities.
