The panoramas show the forest off far better than a single photo. The vertical panorama shows the height of the trees really well.

Agree. I've taken lots of shots in rainforests etc and rarely have any I like. Must remember to try a pano next time.

I've never been able to get a vertical pano of a tree to work properly with a normal camera

The vertical Pano is a ripper. I've failed a few times with these...nothing worth posting, will have to get the Phone out next time.
